The Microsoft Office Tool Ribbon – Still Not Convinced

Posted by Russell Wright on February 23, 2010

I’m still not convinced that the Office tool ribbon  does anything for me that the previous toolbars and menus failed to do.  Here’s my latest example.

I was editing a document and received the message,

Text marked with "do not check spelling or grammar" was skipped.

I don’t remember marking anything with "do not check spelling or grammar."  So now I went on a quest to figure out where this magic setting was hidden.  Since it said "spelling and grammar" I thought I’d look here.

But no such luck.  How about Proofing in Word Options?

Nope!  What are you, CRAZY?  Finally I found this post about Word 2003 that led me to looking at some of the mystery meat tool ribbon navigation.  Since we don’t have a Tools menu, I hovered my mouse around until I found the language options.  That’s convenient…no text, just an easily interpreted icon.  A white thing with a red check mark with a green globe thing in the background.  How could I have missed that?  That says "language options" to me!  Talk to me!

There’s that danged setting!  You have to play with it a little to make sure it doesn’t keep coming back.  I’d suggest using a 16 oz. ball-peen hammer.
